Plans to slash 17 Special Responsibility Allowances (SRAs) claimed by Sunderland City Councillors has been announced today according to the Sunderland Echo.  This is estimated to save £140,000 of taxpayer’s money in the long run.  Sunderland For Transparency has made huge effort in recent weeks to highlight excessively wasteful claiming of such expenses and raising awareness of this to the general public.  SFT’s latest leaflet “How Sunderland Council Wastes Your Money!” has been hitting letter boxes around the City a short time before this announcement.

A Sunderland For Transparency spokesman stated “We welcome the cutting of these bloated allowance packages.  Our tax money should be spent on frontline services and not on excessive bonuses for Councillors.”
