This week Sunderland City Council has decided against renewing a £4.5m data analytics contract for an “intelligence hub” provided by American spy-firm Palantir Technologies a recent report has found. Palantir, nicknamed the "All-Seeing Eye" is used by the CIA and US Secret Service to help crunch masses of data to find insights into tracking down suspects according to TechCrunch.com.  Such analytics have been credited with helping track down terror suspects including Osama bin Laden according to the Wall Street Journal.

A Sunderland For Transparency spokeswoman stated "SFT has always been very skeptical of the use of such military technologies being in the hands of our Council. Hopefully this £4.5m will be put to use on front line services but only time will tell".
