Recently, the Council's Scrutiny Co-ordinating Committee heard that for 2018/19 levels of violent crime rose by 8% – equating to an extra 791 offences. This includes such things as violence against the person, robbery, sex offences and possession of weapons. Further, violence against the person with injury increased by 10% – equating to an extra 16 offences.
Possession of dangerous weapons offences also increased by 18% – leading to an extra 48 offences compared to last year. A Sunderland For Transparency spokeswoman stated "This is a highly concerning trend that a crime wave appears to have hit the City. We need tough action to fight crime and help stop this epidemic".
